About The Vietnam War

Roger served in the U.S. Navy as a submariner in the mid to late 1960s.

He was stationed on four different submarines. The Bashaw*, Pomfret, Blackfin and Tirante. Three out of California and the last out of Key West, Florida. He served nine and a half years in the Navy. The Navy was changing and I was going to have to go to a surface craft. Didn't see myself in that situation. Also was tired of the attitude of the civilians toward the military at that time. My patriotism was at an all time low. A good will trip to Brownsville Texas almost changed my mind. The people there were very patriotic and gracious.333

I still don't any good feelings about that time of my life. It took me 30 some years just to join the American Legion. Mostly just try to forget those years.334

While Roger was on sub duty they put the bow on beaches of North Vietnam to drop off Search and Destroy missions and they set mines in Haiphiong Harbor.
