Prior to the birth of his sixth child, Enoch, Joseph had returned to England to secure an inheritance but died prior to that happening. His widow, Elizabeth, remained on the farm in Chester County. Joseph was a blacksmith and his son Abraham, who was three at the time of his father’s death, also became a blacksmith as did members of the next two generations.

Old Swedes Church where Joseph and Elizabeth were married, is located near the landing site of the first Swedish settlers in the Delaware Valley in Wilmington, Delaware.
It is the oldest church in the United States standing as originally built and still in use as a house of worship. It was erected in 1698-1699 by descendents of the Swedish colonists who crossed the Atlantic aboard the
Kalmar Nyckel in 1638
Designated as a Registered National Historic Landmark on March 29, 1963, three hundred and twenty-five years after the Swedes landed in this country, it was recognized for its unique role in worship by numerous communities of local immigrants throughout it history.
The pulpit is the oldest known pulpit in the United States.
