Fort Wayne (Indiana) Sentinel, January 17, 1901:
Under the firm name of Hoopengardner and Crummit, Messrs. George Hoopengardner, of Ossian, and Wesley Crummit, of this city, will engage in the general merchandise business at Sheldon. The firm today purchased a lot in that village from P.A. Randall and will at once proceed to erect a building.

Tragically Nellie died as a result of childbirth, as did her daughter Gretchen when she gave birth.
Nellie has two gravestones in Oak Lawn Cemetery: one [at] her parents’ plot and another placed by her widower in another part of the cemetery.
Obituary
(Ossian, Indiana) Evening News, April 10, 1902:
Mrs. George Hoopengardner died last night at her home after a few days’ sickness with blood poisoning. She was a young woman aged only about twenty-three. The funeral will be held Friday. Mrs. Hoopengardner was formerly Miss Nellie Earl who worked as a compositor in a newspaper office here. (Note: This same obituary appeared in the Bluffton (Indiana) Chronicle on April 16.)
