Misc. Notes
A man of unmistakable genius, was the second son [of Simon Snyder]. His artist aspirations were early developed, and he desired his father to send him to Italy; but he insisted upon making a lawyer of him. He never practiced, I believe.

Taught school for the most part, and died in Williamsport on the 6th of July, 1865. During the war, being old and feeble, he still insisted upon doing something, and gathered all the newspapers that came in his way, cut out the interesting articles, and pasting them into small scrap-books, sent them to the hospitals to help the sick soldiers while away the tedious hours of sickness. 3265

Hi Stephen,

I came across your query in the Snyder county area of the PA GenWeb page. I don't know if you've turned up anymore info since your posting but maybe I can help a bit.

I am a 7th generation grand-daughter of Gov. Simon Snyder of PA. I am descended through his son, George Antes Snyder, one of his children from his second marriage to Catherine Antes.

I have in my possession a copy of a family history diary started by one of the brothers of my George (probably started in the mid-1800's) and it was kept "sort of" current into the early 1900's. I believe the Governor actually started keeping some sort of notes on the family and Antes Snyder, took over.

In reference to being descended from Simon's brother John; I don't know. He and his wife Mary had four daughters and one son, Anthony. While there is mention of all the girls and who they married, there is no mention of what happened to Anthony. I could not locate him in another Snyder family book I have either. This book also mentions a John Snyder as a son of John Snyder but he is not mentioned at all in the family diary so I don't know if the book is correct or not and maybe someone has their line traced incorrectly.

Governor Snyder's father, Anthony, had a brother named Simon. This "Uncle Simon" had two sons, a Frederick and another Simon. It gets confusing with all the Simons! I have not come across another George Snyder in our line, at least that early on.

Frederick was born Dec 1761 and his brother Simon was born Nov 1763 ... .both the right age to be the father of your George E. Snyder?? I'll keep checking all my books. I have several antique books that deal with the history of PA and Snyder County.

Maybe I'll turn something up. Any questions please let me know.
