It is said that the wife of Samuel was a sister of James Buchannan who was the father of the Fifteenth President of the United States James Buchannan. The father was an Indian trader and lived for a time at a place called “Stoney Batter” near Mercersburg, Franklin County, PA where the future President was born April 22, 1791.

James Buchanan, the only Pennsylvanian to be elected President of the United States, was born in a log cabin in the village of Cove Gap near Mercersburg and grew up in the town.
