My brother Bill [William Hellier Jr.], wrote the shortcut. It's about my father, William Walter Hellier (1921-1982). Dad hated to take a different road and never liked to get lost! He was NOT happy about an alternate route at all.
My father was a real character, reminiscent of Archie Bunker, but not a racist. He taught elementary school for years and loved children and he was artistic himself. I always feel sad that he did not have a longer life.5306

Former Plainfield Road resident Aleene P Hellier, a former Gray Manor Elementary School teacher and Dundalk Elementary School reading specialist, died of COPD on Feb. 10. She was 83.
Mrs. Hellier lived on Plainfield Road for more than 50 years before moving to Augsburg Lutheran Home in 2002.
Born and raised on a dairy farm in Greenwood Township, Pa. the former Aleene Passmore played championship basketball in high school and studied journalism for about two years at Penn State University. She met William W. Hellier Sr. at Penn State and became his wife in 1943. They moved to Dundalk after World War II.
She later earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Johns Hopkins University. She had begun a teaching career in 1954 at Gray Manor Elementary School where she taught second grade for more than 20 years. She later worked as a reading specialist at Dundalk Elementary, before returning to teaching a Hawthorne Elementary in Middle river. Her husband, who had worked for many years as a fruit and vegetable insptctor of Pennsylvania Railroad, also be came a teacher at Martin Boulevard Elementary. He passed away in 1982. Mrs. Hellier retired shortly before she became a widow in 1982.
A true believer in education, she was especially committed to helping children overcome reading difficulties. She was active in the PTA and was well loved by generations of students. She felt proud to have been part of her students' education.
At First Lutheran Church of Gray Manor, Mrs. Hellier taught Sunday school and confirmation classes, sang in the choir and was an active member of the women's group. In 2002, where she was 80 years old, she was recognized by the church as its Mother of the Year.
In retirement, she and her son traveled throughout the United States and Europe.
She is survived by children William W. Hellier, jr., of New Millport, Pa., and Wendy Stevens of Jarrettsville, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was also pre deceased by daughter Susan Dunn and brother Harry Passmore of Punxsutawney, Pa.
The Rev. William Wallace conducted services Feb. 14 at First Lutheran Church of Gray Manor and graveside at Holly Hill Memorial Gardens.

Courageous Working Mother
Aleene Passmore got married before she had a chance to graduate from Penn State University. She and her husband, William Hellier, Sr. began their family before he went on a tour of duty in the Phillipines. Later, after the war, William and Aleene moved to Baltimore, Maryland where she was a homemaker.
In the early 1950's, she became a school teacher for the Baltimore County Board of Education. She taught second grade for many years before becoming a Reading Specialist. Aleene was a very hard working lady who not only worked full time during a time when most women were at home, but also went to night school to better herself two nights a week, plus remained very active in both church and school work.
She was a selfless lady, always putting her Lord, her family and the community first.

Championship Team Takes Trip: Clearfield Progress Weds. May 17, 1939

According to the Clearfield Progress in Clearfield Pennsylvania, and published on Wedsnesday, 17 May in the Mahaffey Column,
Miss Mayme McDowell of Mahaffey High School entertained girls of the championship basketball team at her home in Dallastown. They were Aleene Passmore, Jean Shearer, Jean Mikesell, Ruth Griffith, Dortha Nolen and Norma Miles. On their trip the girls visited many places of interest including the battle field of Gettysburg and the Capital at Harrisburg.
Also in the same column there is an account of Aleene's grandmother, Belle Passmore being feted on her 79th birthday.
