OccupationLogger
Misc. Notes
His kids describe Harry as quiet, hard working, serious. Very stern strict. When he was a logger, he had his leg run over by a log, there was a stump sticking out of it, which made a big hole in his leg the size of a softball, he had to dress it every night for the rest of his life, yet he never missed a day of work walked 20 miles to from work everyday. He walked with a limp from it eventually became very crippled by it was in a wheelchair. At one point they wanted to amputate his leg.
Harry came from a very strict home in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. Harry went to West Virginia with some of his Lord family members, possibly his Father. They were all in West Virginia in 1900. It is in West Virginia that Harry met Eva, he was working in the lumber camps she lived right on the river where he would send his logs to be cut.
They left West Virginia together in 1913 went to Cumberland, Maryland to be married. They moved on settled in Helen, Georgia, where Harry met a man by the name of Charlie Maloof. He Charlie, among others built the first hotel on Main Street in Helen, Georgia, where it still stands today [2010?], not as a hotel, but it is in use in the new Bavarian town*. They also built other nearby hotels homes,
Harry was well known in the area for being the man of the woods, he told stories of riding through the wooded mountains on his horse with Eva riding sidesaddle with him.
Harry [and] Eva had 3 children in Georgia, Pearl, the second born, died at 6 weeks of age from an allergic reaction to shellfish through her Mothers milk. She is buried in the cemetery behind the old White County Church in Helen.
When the Georgia land was stripped bare from the loggers, Harry left Georgia for work. From Georgia, they went on to North Carolina, where Harry continued his logging trade he [and] Eva added 3 more children to their family, but they were shortly ran out by the KKK, because Eva did not agree with their beliefs they were beginning to take over the area, Eva insisted they move.
There was no work left for Harry either, logging was becoming a trade of the past. Harry’s brothers and sister were living in Michigan [and] wrote to Harry telling him about the factories coming to the area, work would be abundant, so they moved to Ypsilanti, Michigan, added 6 more children† to their family!
The older boys went on to work in the factories; Harry began working at the schools as a maintenance man/ janitor. By this time, his leg was in bad shape, but he still managed to walk 20 miles to from work everyday work a full day. Harry was a wonderful father & grandfather everyone that knew him has many wonderful stories about him that they share often. Harry passed away January 26, 1958.
