Misc. Notes

Eva was born May 1, 1897 to Andrew J. Louk Ella J. Sturm in Montrose, West Virginia. Her sister, Alice was born two years later. By 1900, they were living in Elkins, West Virginia. Her Father was 28 years older than her mother so by the time Eva was born, her father was already 60 years old.

Eva has always told the story of her younger sister playing outside. Eva was about 5 Alice was about 3. Eva had put her mothers dress on Alice playing in the front yard, Ella came home scolded Eva was very upset by this. Eva then remembers her mother talking to a woman over the fence of their yard the woman telling Ella that if she would let her take her care for her; that she would send Eva to the finest schools in town send her to Millinery school to learn the hat making trade. Ella thought this would be a great idea, because there was nothing like that in the town they lived in. So shortly after that, Eva went with the woman to live in Winfield, Putnam County, West Virginia, across the state from where she was with her family.

The woman never sent Eva to school at all, Eva became a servant to the woman her family instead. Eva remembers her Father coming to the house a few times to try to get Eva back, but the woman was very mean somehow ran Andrew off. Andrew died sometime between 1905 1919. Eva remembers the woman as being very mean drinking a lot. Eva never mentioned her name once she left West Virginia.

On one occasion, the woman had sent Eva to the store there was a truant officer there who asked Eva why she wasn't in school, he walked her home to talk to the woman she was told she had to send Eva to school or she would be fined. She did send Eva for a very short time Eva remembers loving it wanting to continue to go, but the woman began lying about Eva’s age so that she could continue to be a servant instead of going to school.

Eva had caught the eye of a man who was working as a logger, by the name of Harry Bloom, she was only 14 he was 34. In the 1910 census Eva is listed as a servant living with John Miller, an editor of a newspaper, Nora Miller, his wife, John’s nephew, Earl, who is 5 at the time. (Eva named her first son Earl, probably after this child). I'm sure she got very close to the little boy; she was probably the one who took care of him.

Weather Nora Miller is the woman she went to live with or the family she was farmed out to, I'm unsure, she would not ever speak of her, only say that she detested her. Harry was still in the area two years later became familiar to the way Eva was being treated, so she ran off with him to get married in Cumberland, Maryland. (Read Harry's story for the events between here Michigan)

Eva was such a sweet woman, whom everyone adored. She was a tiny woman of 4'11", but somehow managed to be the foundation for the entire family. Everyone misses her loves her very much. Stories are always told about her.7053

Misc. Notes
His kids describe Harry as quiet, hard working, serious. Very stern strict. When he was a logger, he had his leg run over by a log, there was a stump sticking out of it, which made a big hole in his leg the size of a softball, he had to dress it every night for the rest of his life, yet he never missed a day of work walked 20 miles to from work everyday. He walked with a limp from it eventually became very crippled by it was in a wheelchair. At one point they wanted to amputate his leg.

Harry came from a very strict home in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. Harry went to West Virginia with some of his Lord family members, possibly his Father. They were all in West Virginia in 1900. It is in West Virginia that Harry met Eva, he was working in the lumber camps she lived right on the river where he would send his logs to be cut.

They left West Virginia together in 1913 went to Cumberland, Maryland to be married. They moved on settled in Helen, Georgia, where Harry met a man by the name of Charlie Maloof. He Charlie, among others built the first hotel on Main Street in Helen, Georgia, where it still stands today [2010?], not as a hotel, but it is in use in the new Bavarian town*. They also built other nearby hotels homes,

Harry was well known in the area for being the man of the woods, he told stories of riding through the wooded mountains on his horse with Eva riding sidesaddle with him.

Harry [and] Eva had 3 children in Georgia, Pearl, the second born, died at 6 weeks of age from an allergic reaction to shellfish through her Mothers milk. She is buried in the cemetery behind the old White County Church in Helen.

When the Georgia land was stripped bare from the loggers, Harry left Georgia for work. From Georgia, they went on to North Carolina, where Harry continued his logging trade he [and] Eva added 3 more children to their family, but they were shortly ran out by the KKK, because Eva did not agree with their beliefs they were beginning to take over the area, Eva insisted they move.

There was no work left for Harry either, logging was becoming a trade of the past. Harry’s brothers and sister were living in Michigan [and] wrote to Harry telling him about the factories coming to the area, work would be abundant, so they moved to Ypsilanti, Michigan, added 6 more children† to their family!

The older boys went on to work in the factories; Harry began working at the schools as a maintenance man/ janitor. By this time, his leg was in bad shape, but he still managed to walk 20 miles to from work everyday work a full day. Harry was a wonderful father & grandfather everyone that knew him has many wonderful stories about him that they share often. Harry passed away January 26, 1958.
___

There are several letters to and from Harry, as well as numerous photos documenting his life at the general source.
