Ward Mays, 94, of Ramey died Monday, Aug. 20, 2012 at the Clearfield Hospital.
He was born May 10, 1918 in Houtzdale, a son of the late Will and Jennie (Johnston) Mays.
Mr. Mays was a graduate of the former Woodward Township High School. He was an active member of the Ramey United Methodist Church.
He was a farmer in his earlier years and also owned and operated "Ward's Place," a small family restaurant in Houtzdale.
He worked at the former JBC Manufacturing of Madera and Penshire Manufacturing of Philipsburg. After his retirement, he founded "Ward's Wood Crafts" of Ramey. His creations could be found in many gift shops and flea markets in the area. He continued woodworking until the spring of 2012.
Mr. Mays could be found most afternoons enjoying pie and coffee at a local restaurant.
He's survived by his wife, Marybell (Stephens) Mays, who he married Jan. 1, 1944 in Irvona.
In addition to his wife, he's survived by three daughters, Ruth Saupp and her husband, Larry of Smithmill, Jane Zapsky and her husband, Bill of Madera and Marie Fox and her husband, Wayne of Ramey.
He was the grandfather of David Zapsky, Mark Fox and Susan Hiatt; the great-grandfather of Ryan Saupp, Brenna Saupp, Isabella Zapsky, Andrew Zapsky and Elijah Hiatt; and the great great-grandfather of Owen Saupp.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, James Saupp; two brothers, Carl and Luther Mays and a sister, Lenora Spotts.
At Mr. Mays' request, there will be no public visitation and services will be announced at a later date.
