In one of his passages to this country in a letter-of-marque he was captured by a French ship-of-war and confined in France as a prisoner upwards of a year, where he endured much hardship.

In 1702 he settled in Philadelphia, where he engaged in the mercantile business. About 1714 he removed to West Marlborough township, of this county, and settled on a large tract of land, of which he became proprietor by virtue of a grant from William Penn to George Collett, his grandfather. He there, in 1738, erected a large mansion, "Primitive Hall," in which he died, 3, 27, 1771. He married Mary Levis, and had twelve children.

Joseph’s birth place of County Tipperary was one of the first Irish counties to be established in the 13th century. Oliver Cromwell, who is infamous in Ireland, laid siege to Clonmel in May 1650 during his campaign in Ireland. Cromwell's 8,000 men eventually took the town from its 2,000 Irish defenders, but not before they suffered losses of around 2,000 soldiers.2964
