For whatever reasons, my great-grandfather changed his name from William H Stage to William Frantsie Littlefield after the Civil War.  I have a copy of a letter John T State signed that states he knew his son by both names.

This was in William's Civil War papers as he died before his father and left a widow in Illinois--and one in Colorado! My great-grandmother was able to prove she was still legally married to the man when he took a second wife in Colorado--guess one could get away with that since communications were primitive in those days...
